Our program offers students a schedule that includes the following classes outside of their main classroom time:
The preschool curriculum is aligned to the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS), with assessment facilitated by the Connecticut Documentation and Observation for teaching system (CT DOTS) framework. Age appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences incorporate literacy, math and STEAM activities, and are individualized to each child's needs and abilities. Center time and circle time are designed to be flexible, allowing students to approach tasks at their own developmental levels. Children work in small groups, participating in both teacher-directed and student-directed activities.
Children learn about the world around them and develop a strong sense of self through play, which we value as rich, authentic learning experiences within the preschool classroom. Activities and materials are designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity while building independence and providing an outlet for self expression and creativity. Literacy skills are integrated in play as they are both developed and strengthened through the use of receptive and expressive language.
The curriculum is implemented by using a combination of direct instruction and play-based centers, with literacy experiences to develop a love of books, print and phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and a rich vocabulary. Preschool students also explore a variety of sensory activities and manipulatives to promote kinesthetic learning, encourage problem-solving, patterning, and number sense. Daily activities inside and outdoors utilize both large and small muscles, stimulating the development of fine and gross motor skills. Attention to social/emotional development is emphasized because it is the foundation of the entire curriculum. It is integrated into daily learning/play activities and group times and is supported with literature, formal and informal discussions, positive behavior incentives, adult facilitation, role play and modeling.
Our students are given the tools necessary to thrive through these formative years. Our faculty strive to bring out each student’s full potential through our high rigor academics.
